Household stainless steel saucepans are made from low-carbon steel (typically less than 0.1%). A good quality saucepan costs around $30.50. Bulk steel of this high quality costs about $875 per tonne. The density of steel is 7900 kg/m3.
i. Assume the saucepans to be cylindrical in shape with a circular bottom. This saucepan has a diameter of 18 cms and a height of 13 cms. Thickness can be assumed to be 4 mm. Determine the added value in the transformation from billet of steel to a saucepan.
ii. Comment on the overall added value with respect to the cost of the steel. Would you agree that all the added value is the manufacturer’s profit?

The problem is in computing the volume.
V= pi R^2 t + [2pi(R + t)^2 - 2piR^2 ]t h where
R - inside radius of the saucepan (.18m/2)
t - thickness (0.004m)
h - height (0.13m)
simplifying
V= pi( R^2 t +2 [R^2 + 2Rt + t^2 - R^2 ])t h
V=pi( R^2 + 4R + 2t )t^2 h
V= pi(0.09^2 + 4 x 0.09 x 0.004 + 2x 0.004^2)0.004x0.13=1.6 E-5 m^2
m= p x V=7900 x 1.6 E-5 E-4 = 0.12kg
Cost = ($875 /1000)x m=$0.11
i) Added value is $30.50 - 0.11=$30.39
ii) No since profit = $30.50 - material cost + labor cost + manufacturing cost + overhead cost + sales cost and so on.
and we only have material cost.
