Salt Pepper Pot

When a recipe says "Salt and Pepper to taste", how much would you put in a huge pot of soup?

No measurement listed. It serves about 8 people. It has chopped tomatoes, beef broth, several vegetables, ground meat, oregano and macaroni......and "Salt and Pepper to taste". People don't use a lot of salt anymore so I don't want to over-do it......should I just use a little of each and if it's not enough, then they can put more salt and pepper on after they have tasted it? What do you think?

Recipes use "to taste" for a reason. Different people have different tastes in regards to salt and pepper specifically. I would recommend about a teaspoon of salt and a half teaspoon of pepper to start. Let it simmer a bit and retaste it. Once the seasoning has cooked in it will taste different. Repeat this process until it reaches your preference. If you are worried about how much your guests will want, offer salt and pepper for them to adjust as needed. I think a teaspoon or two of salt and about a teaspoon of pepper will be right around what you should end up at.
