How to stop "freezer burn" on stored meat products?
Our refrigerator-freezer is old and we rent our home so have to keep using it. No matter how I wrap meat, after a few days the meat gets "freezer-burn". We have a machine that sucks the air out of a bag holding the meat, but it still gets "burned".
I am going to get a Freezer thermometer to use, to keep the freezer at the proper temperature for proper meat storage. My Question really is: What temperature should I keep the freezer to safely store food and still avoid "freezer-burn" in meat products?
Go to WalMart or a place like that and get one of those new ziplock bag things with the vacuum for it. I think they have 2 different kinds.
One is battery powered pump and one is a hand pump.
They are cheap and so far they work great. About $3 to $7.
Put the meat in the bags, zip them on the top and then use the pump to suck out all the air.
I got the one with the hand pump and it works fine.
Other than that you can get a vacuum sealer. They range from about $40 to $125 dollars.
Both kinds will help not get freezer burns for a lot longer.
