Do I Need to Line my Kitchen Shelves?
My mother (age 86) and are are now living together and I truly want to make her feel comortable. About 85% of our time is wonderful; then we have that 15% of total disagreement. Here's the latest challenge. She thinks that every kitchen shelf needs to be lined (in plastic or paper). I believe that only those shelves that could be damaged by liquid spills (like under the sink) and the shelves that hold our GLASSWARE need to be lined and all lining would be in plastic. I am almost 50 years old and it has been my practice since I lived away from home to line as above and twice a year remove all items from each shelve and thoroughly wipe out the cabinet. NOW, IT WILL BE MY JOB TO MEASURE, PURCHASE, CUT AND INSTALL the lining. We've lived in this new home for 12 weeks - she absolutely refuses to unpack kitchen items until everything is lined. THIS IS DRIVING ME NUTS! I will be reading everyone's opinion with great interest and will freely admit if I'm wrong. Thanks, guys!
Hi, Grandma here... I'm 60 and know what you mean. I am also a professional housekeeper. Shelves were lined years ago for a few reasons... unfinished wood, painted wood, (lead?), appearance, and pier pressure.
Today, most cabinets have great interiors. They are finished with washable surfaces. They also match the exterior of the cabinets.
If you line a cabinet or not, just be sure to store all dishes with open side up. Don't turn that glass over to put it away. Don't dry your dishes, let them air dry. Don't use a dish drainer. We do get sick from our dishes if we don't clean and store them properly.
I wouldn't use anything in the cabinets that can "store" germs. With me, you win.
