What charateristic(s) define a fruit- fruit, instead of being called a vegetable?

Why are apples fruits, not vegetables?
Why are carrots vegetables, not fruits?

Why are tomatoes fruits, at all?
What characteristics draw that line?

The part of the plant that contains seeds are fruits. All other parts (leaves, stems, roots) are vegetables.

This is the strict definition, from a biological perspective.

In cooking, some seed-containing foods are considered vegetables, like cucumber. It has to do (I THINK) with how you use them and whether they are sweet.

Informally, in ordinary language, the distinction isn't all that clear or consistent.
