Reasonably Priced Pork Dishes
With the increase of food prices, why should one spend excess money on overpriced meats.
Butchers concur that cheaper pork are the next best alternative to prime meats, because the key difference is how each meat is cooked.
Pork can be a very affordable meat; it's all dependant on the cut, and which part of the body one would like.
It can be sold minced, which is fitting for casseroles and kebabs, and put into edible casing and turns it into people's all time favourite, the sausage.
The 'rib cut' acts as a very popular selection. You can also roast it, and best of all barbeque it - an ideal feast for summer period. The 'hock' is the lower part of a pig's leg, and needs to be cooked longer because the density of meat is greater. This is great for stews, braised dishes and even soups, since the added time means that it draws out more flavour from the meat into its surroundings.
An affordable and delicious meat dish can be purchased for under £10, such as grilled pork, roasted pork chops, and pre-cooked BBQ ribs.
Below are some healthy eating facts for pork:
- Rather than frying, try grilling the meat.
- Opt for the leanest cut, with little fat.
- By roasting the meat on a metal rack, excess fat will run off the meat.
- Refrain from putting in additional fat or oil.
- Smaller portions of meat can be balanced out with larger portions of vegetables.
Other than the cost-effective factor, pork actually has so much more to offer. It provides a healthy basis of minerals, protein and minerals, such as selenium, iron and zinc.
The problem is that key vitamins can be lost at some point cooking. Broiling and roasting provide better vitamin preservation than braising, and stewing destroys the majority of vitamins. Jaws dropped to the floor yet? But it's true, longer cooking times can destroy both harmful bacteria and useful vitamins in meat.
Pork is rumoured to be very fattening and large quantities consumed can be very unhealthy. This isn't entirely true - preparation of the meat is what matters. Everyone has their own opinion, but the facts are clear to see, so have a browse around.
