Are Homemade Dog Treats Better?

Feeding your dog homemade dog treats is a great way to spoil your dog, and make sure that they receive healthy nutritious snacks, instead of the sugary, fat laden treats that are sold commercially.

Commercial dog treats can be extremely expensive, and due to the intense processing, contain little to no health benefits for your pet. The ingredients list on the box doesn't tell you everything. For example, the declaration that the treats contain meat could refer to meat by-products that have been labelled as "not fit for consumption by humans". These meat by-products include things such as the heads, feet and intestines of animals.

These commercially produced dog treats are designed to be attractive to the pet owners that buy them and since dogs' judge food with their sense of smell, are often sprayed with fat and sugar in order to make them appetising for canines.

With homemade dog treats on the other hand, you know exactly what you are giving your dog as you've brought and combined the ingredients yourself. By following a carefully formulated recipe, you are able to ensure that your friend gets the nutrients he needs to be happy and healthy.

It is important to follow the recipe exactly, not switching out any ingredients for others unless you know for certain that the new ingredient will not harm your pet. Certain foods that humans consume on a daily basis can be harmful to dogs, even leading to death in some cases. That is why it is important to stick to the recipe, or only use ingredients that your veterinarian says are safe.

Making homemade dog treats is a fun activity that the whole family could get involved in. Here are a couple of healthy, nutritious and yummy treats you and your family could make for your pet.

Meaty Dog Biscuits
Ingredients:
- 2 3/4 cups whole wheat flour
- 1/2 cup powdered milk
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 egg- 6 tablespoons vegetable oil
- 8-10 tablespoons water
- 2 jars of strained baby food (beef, chicken or lamb)
Directions:
- Preheat your oven to 350°F
- In a mixing bowl, combine all of the ingredients.
- Knead the dough for about 3 minutes.- Roll it out until it's about an inch thick.
- Here's the part where you break out the cute bone shaped cookie cutters! Or you can use a pizza cutter to cut the dough into the desired size.
- Bake the biscuits for 20-25 min. on an ungreased cookie sheet.
Makes about 24 biscuits.

Fruity Frozen Yogurt Treats
Here's another super-quick dog treat recipe to keep your friend cool after a long, hot walk.
Ingredients:
- 1 jar of fruit baby food
- 8 oz. strawberry yogurt (any variety will do)
Directions:
- Just mix both of the ingredients together and freeze in an ice cube tray.

Super Easy Peanut Butter Dog Treats
Ingredients:
- 2 cups whole wheat flour
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1 cup peanut butter (smooth only, please)
- 1 cup milk- 1/2 cup oatmeal
Directions:
- Start by preheating your oven to 375 degrees and lightly greasing a baking or pizza pan.
- In a medium mixing bowl, add the flour, baking powder and oatmeal. Once that's mixed, add the peanut butter and milk. Stir it together until a dough forms.
- Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface, knead it and then roll it out until it's about a ¼ inch thick. Break out your cute bone-shaped cookie cutters or a pizza cutter and cut the dough into the desired size and shape.
- Bake those on the lightly greased baking pan and cook for about 20 minutes or until they're golden brown.
Once cool, let your favourite pup enjoy before storing them in an airtight jar (or resealable freezer bag).
